What to Look for in Before-and-After Photos from a Cleaning Company

Close-ups of downspouts, clean sills, and bagged debris prove the work was actually done.

When you're hiring a window cleaning company in Houston, before-and-after photos are one of the fastest ways to tell if they actually know what they're doing. But not all before-and-afters are created equal. A lot of companies will post photos that look impressive at first glance but don't really show you what you're paying for. We've been cleaning windows in Houston for years, and we've seen plenty of marketing photos that hide problems instead of solving them. Here's what to actually look for when you're evaluating a cleaning company's work.

## Lighting and angle matter, but consistency matters more

The first thing people notice about a before-and-after is the lighting. A photo taken on a cloudy day before and a bright sunny day after will make any job look better. That's not dishonest exactly, but it's not the clearest picture either. What you want to see is photos taken from roughly the same angle and in similar light. If a company is posting photos where the before shot is dark and grainy and the after shot is perfectly lit, they're probably trying to hide something.

The real test is whether the same window looks clean from multiple angles. Houston's humidity and heat mean your windows get dirty in specific ways, and a good cleaning job should look good whether the light is hitting it from the left or right. When you look at a company's portfolio, pick a few photos and ask yourself if that window would still look clean at 3 p.m. versus 10 a.m. If you can't tell, that's a red flag.

## Check for streaks and residue in the glass itself

This is the detail that separates careful work from rushed work. A clean window should be transparent. That means when you look at the after photo, you should be able to see clearly through the glass without any haze, streaks, or film. In Houston's climate, mineral deposits from our water are a real problem. If the after photo still shows a cloudy or spotted appearance, the job wasn't finished properly.

Look closely at the edges of the window frame and the corners. These are the places where cleaning solution and mineral deposits hide. If the corners still look dirty or you can see water marks, the cleaner cut corners. A thorough job means those spots are gone. Streaks are the most obvious sign of poor technique, but they're also the easiest to hide with the right camera angle. If you can see any streaks at all in an after photo, that's work you don't want.

## Look at the frames and sills, not just the glass

A lot of before-and-afters focus only on the window glass itself because that's the most dramatic change. But a real cleaning job includes the frames, sills, and tracks. These areas collect dirt, pollen, and debris, especially in Houston where the air quality varies. If the after photos show clean glass but dirty frames, that's an incomplete job.

The sills are particularly important because they're where water pools and debris sits. If you see grime still caked in there after cleaning, you know the company didn't do the full work. Some companies will clean the glass beautifully but leave the sill looking like it hasn't been touched in months. That's a sign they're rushing through jobs.

## Watch out for photos that show only the best angle

A honest portfolio shows a range of work. If every single before-and-after photo shows a residential window that's maybe two feet wide, that's probably because those are the easiest jobs to make look good. Real window cleaning work includes storefronts, office buildings, skylights, and large residential windows. These are harder to clean and harder to photograph, but they're also more representative of what a company can actually do.

If you're getting quotes from multiple companies, ask specifically for before-and-afters of jobs similar to yours. If they can't provide them, that might mean they don't have much experience with that type of work. A company that's cleaned a lot of Houston homes will have plenty of examples of residential jobs in different neighborhoods and with different window types.

## Ask about the conditions in the before photos

When you call a company, ask them about the conditions shown in their before photos. How long had it been since the windows were last cleaned. What kind of dirt are we talking about, pollution, hard water deposits, or just regular dust. This tells you whether they're comparing their work to a similar starting point as your windows.

If their portfolio is full of windows that were cleaned years ago versus your windows that were cleaned six months ago, you're not getting an apples-to-apples comparison. The dirtier the before, the more impressive the after looks, but that doesn't mean they'll get your specific windows equally clean.
